NIGHT BLOOM by Ayla August

Like an ink drop on a still and clear water, “Night Bloom” is about the fears, fantasies, and insecurities that muddle my mind at night. These paintings are connected by a greyish-blue color, which represents a foreboding deep water.

The deep water is what unsettles me the most in the world. It is deep and dark like the night. So similar to the abyss, waking my fear of the unknown. It is deadly, often appearing in my dreams as a tidal wave–inching closer to devour, to drown, to suffocate. A tidal wave of all the things that leave me aching at night. A pain ever blooming. A pain I try to soothe by painting in water and colors.

To further relate to the paintings, my dark thoughts are portrayed by women. Women who are bare. Exposed. Vulnerable. These are portraits of me.

Me, as a woman.

Me, as a human.
