Responde foregrounds the idea of contemporary response: a conscious, reflective way of engaging with the present that stands in contrast to the reactionary tendencies that dominate much of society today. In moments of crisis and political tension, responses are often reduced to instant outrage, noise, and fleeting gestures that subside once attention shifts. This exhibition challenges that pattern. Informed by the practice of creating “response work” in Manny Garibay’s Amuyong Mentorship Program under Linangan Art Residency, the artists were invited to respond freely and without censorship, letting time, reflection, and personal conviction shape their works. Contemporary response, in this sense, is not about speed or spectacle, but about intention, accountability, and staying with the question long enough for meaning to emerge.
Situated in the Philippine context where corruption, injustice, and historical plunder continue to fracture identity and deepen division, Responde proposes response as both an artistic method and a civic stance. While reaction thrives on immediacy, response insists on depth: how does one answer pressing issues today, and what does that answer look like when translated into an artwork? Across varied practices, a shared perspective becomes visible: not through uniform themes, but through a collective refusal to merely react. Going beyond expression, Responde positions contemporary response as a form of resistance and care, affirming art’s capacity to think critically, speak deliberately, and remain present in times that demand more than momentary outrage.
